EXCLUSIVE: NRL's Ayliffe facing debt dilemma

NRL judiciary member Royce Ayliffe looks to be headed to the bankruptcy courts over a $40,000 debt.

A creditors petition filed by collection agency ACM Group names David Royce Ayliffe, 56, as the respondent debtor.

At time of publication Ayliffe had not filed a notice of appearance in response so there is still ample time for the dispute to be settled before the December 19 hearing date.

According to ASIC records David Royce Ayliffe, 56, is a director and secretary of specialist maintenance firm Applied Ultrasonics Australia Pty Limited
.

The record declares his birthdate to be November 1, 1956. His address is listed as a unit in Blackalls Park, NSW.

A debt agreement proposal submitted to creditors of David Royce Ayliffe on September 13, 2012 shows the debtor's birthdate as November 1, 1956. His address is the same Blackalls Park address as that of Royce Ayliffe, director of Applied Ultrasonics.

On Tuesday morning a caller who identified himself to Sydney Insolvency News as Royce Ayliffe of the NRL judiciary called from the same number listed for Royce Ayliffe, sales director, on Applied Ultrasonic Australia's website.

ASIC records show David Royce Ayliffe, born November 1, 1956, also holds directorships with the Men of League Foundation Limited and Supporters of Men of League Limited. Under those entities he is listed as residing in Maroubra.

Ayliffe refused to comment on ACM's recovery action. "You don't know the whole story", he told SiN without elaborating. Subsequent calls to Ayliffe were terminated without comment.

A detailed email sent to Ayliffe had not been replied to at time of publication. NRL director of Media and Communications John Brady told SiN: "... it would be inappropriate for the NRL to enter into conjecture about a person's private affairs.

"In the case of an NRL Judiciary panelist, the NRL would only ever have a legitimate interest in that person's affairs if some aspect of them directly impacted on that person's capacity to carry out his duties as a panelist," Brady said in a statement.

The NRL was also asked if it had a policy to deal with judiciary members who are the subject of recovery action in the courts. The organisation declined to provide a specific answer.

A creditors petition that is not responded to or successfully defended can lead to the issuing by the courts of a sequestration order and the debtor being bankrupted.

The filing of the creditors petition comes more than two years after an adverse judgement was awarded against David Royce Ayliffe in the Downing Centre local court on June 16, 2010.

The former Roosters great and 1980 Dally M Captain of the Year has served on the NRL's rotating judiciary panel since 2001.
